As August slips away into an autumnal September we have another look back to the commemorations of the events 50 years ago which have dominated the steam railway scene this year. Here we see the only main line certified survivor from the last train of 11th August 1968 at work today, no 44871, seen on another amazing "survivor" from those days in the form of the recently reinstated Waverley Route (or, at least part of it) climbing the fierce Borthwick Bank on the double-track "dynamic loop" from two camera positions. The passengers would enjoy a visit to Sir Walter Scott's old at home at Abbotswood, his Waverley novels and his home's proximity to the line having given the latter its name.
