The Board of Trustees responsible for administering Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) has announced it will no longer be supporting the Great Central Railway's (GCR) plans to develop a new railway museum at Birstall.

The railway has expressed its astonishment at the news which saw HLF withdraw their earmarked funding for the ambitious mainline project. HLF originally showed their interest in the project back in 2015 designating more than £9.5m, which was subject to a stage 2 submission which the railway had been preparing. It was announced that the organisation had concerns regarding outstanding risks including continuing extended timescales, future operational costs and management arrangements, and the potential for costs to increase further, and that they would no longer be supporting with the requested funding.

The planned project / attraction, “Main Line” would see iconic locomotives on display in a brand new museum telling the story of how the railways changed the city. GCR maintains that this finance hinderance will not mean the end of the project and are still committed to finding a plan B and a new source of funding.
