The two dates to be affected represent a 24-hour strike from 5pm on Thursday 4 June and a 48-hour strike from 5pm on Tuesday 9 June. Across Network Rail, the RMT has some 16,000 members, who are employed in maintenance and signalling primarily. The idea of the event is try to generate additional volunteers for the railway by allowing visitors to see the various departments of the railway — such as signalling — in action.
The railway is in the process of constructing a new restoration and education centre with progress on the structure spectacular since the start of the year. The railway has an ongoing appeal to raise £25,000 to see the line’s resident Class 31 — No D5518 — restored to an operable condition.

The Llangollen & Corwen Railway, later to be subsumed within the Great Western Railway (having been operated by the GWR from opening) in August 1896, was formally authorised by an Act of Parliament on 6 August 1860. Although only nine miles in length, the route included the 689-yard long tunnel at Berwyn and two bridges over the River Dee including the stone-built viaduct at Berwyn. Rumour has it that the South West Trains station of Vauxhall once so impressed the Russian Tsar, on a visit in the 1840s, that it actually gave its name to the Russian word for ‘large station’ (vokzal). That may or may not be true, but recent investment by the Network Rail/South West Trains Alliance has given the 167-year-old station a fresh look on platforms 7 and 8.

The housing development, which is a joint venture between St William and National Grid, will see 839 houses built on the site, which is located between the site of the iconic Battersea Power Station, itself now being redeveloped after many years of dereliction following closure, and Battersea Park station.

There will be no fees for those attending the valuation day although anyone interested in possibly selling items at auction will be able to do so if they wish at a future Greenslade, Taylor, Hunt event. The two projects — that at Sheringham is scheduled to cost £80,000 and be completed by contractors by spring 2016 and that at Holt will cost £35,000 and be completed in 2017 having been built by volunteers — will considerably enhance the facilities offered by the railway at its two termini.

The £1.6bn investment programme will improve connections between major towns and cities from London through the East Midlands to South Yorkshire, paving the way for faster, quieter, greener electric trains.
Piling work for the equipment, which will eventually support the wires that will power electric trains, started this month between Bedford and Kettering.
