The traffic requirements of the now-closed power station meant that track capacity on the ex-North British Railway line west of Dunfermline was inadequate to carry passenger services. But with the 46-year-old power station’s closure — the latest in a number of older coal and biomass fired power stations to close in Britain — this ceases to be an issue.

Offenders tagged carriages in the sidings at Corfe Castle and Herston, sometime in the evening of March 29 or in the early hours of March 30.

Purbeck police have released images of the damage, which is estimated to cost Swanage hundreds of pounds in clean-up costs and lost revenue.

For volunteers, it’s a repeat of the scene played out on March 15, when three railway carriages were targeted on Station Approach.

Police implored the public for assistance.

The new railway removes one of the last major bottlenecks on the West Coast main line by allowing trains travelling to Manchester from the south and West Midlands to travel over, rather than across, the existing tracks.
