If the project is to remain on schedule for completion by 2021, the first components of the cylinder block have to be ordered in early 2018. At its annual convention on 30th September 2017, The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust set itself the challenge of raising £100,000 through The Cylinder Club from 100 supporters each donating £1,000 (plus Gift Aid) to the project in up to eight payments of £125 by standing order.

The £50 million upgrade is the biggest since its opening in 1975 and could be complete within seven years, if funding goes to plan.

Backed by York Central's Central Enterprise Zone support, the plan would see the Leeman Road site completely overhauled to unify the two halves of the museum with one building.

The company, which also organises the Shakespeare Express between Birmingham Snow Hill and Stratford-upon-Avon, announced the scheme which has been launched to raise £3m to secure the future of these historic trains being able to operate along mainline routes.

Tornado - on her first and most recent visit to the ELR in 2010

During Tornado's visit the ELR will be running up to four full line services a day along the Lancashire heritage railway's 12-mile line, with visitor numbers expected to be particularly high. The already iconic new-build engine, which was completed in 2008, has not visited the ELR since 2010.

Shortly afterwards the first train, comprising the Permanent Way Department’s ballast and engineering wagons, was carefully propelled into the platforms, alongside the brand new station building.

This was the first train to stop at Broadway station since British Railways closed this and other stations on the line, on 7th March 1960. Broadway station itself was demolished in November 1963.

The milestone occurred last Thursday December 28th, when the AVR's Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T 'Richboro' hauled two train carriages plus a brake van along the railway's newly installed section of track, a curve just out of Lionheart station on the outskirts of Alnwick. The train then ran down an incline onto the original Alnmouth to Alnwick trackbed, a section which has not carried a passenger service since June 18, 1966.
