Trials are being proposed for the railway, which is the longest heritage line in England, bringing an estimated £5M into the Somerset economy ever year. If these trials prove successful, the heritage line would be connected to the mainline for the first time in 50 years which would help to bring even more tourists and residents to the area.

This development plan will be the first phase of a £1.5million project to lengthen the railway's line by crossing the A4169, and is being funded by the popular Polar Express franchise.

The railway currently runs from Lawley Village to Horsehay & Dawley stations on the old Wellington and Severn Junction line that once ran between Wellington and Craven Arms via the Ironbridge Gorge. The railway is operated mainly by volunteers, and was formed as a preservation railway in 1976.

NYMR Q6 and RAF Centenary

This year's gala is set to be a special one as the railway celebrates 100 years of the their Q6 locomotives along with the 100th anniversary of the RAF.
 
The NYMR's own Q6 locomotive is 100 years old and additionally preserved locomotives of the same age will join the railway for the celebration. The tender was purchased from William Cooke Cast Products Ltd following the success of the 163 Pacifics Club fundraising campaign, which has raised over £200,000.

Just a week ago on Saturday 28th July, over 100 supporters of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust gathered at Darlington Locomotive Works to celebrate the tenth birthday of No. 60163 Tornado. The locomotive made its first moves in front of the world’s press on 1st August 2008 and has subsequently become a household name.
