North Yorkshire Moors Railway unveils future development plans

NYMR plans submitted for new carriage workshop and storage facility in Pickering

The application submitted by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) includes the building of a carriage stable with associated storage and staff and service facilities for up to 40 carriages from the running fleet.

The development, if the plans are approved by the local authorities, would also include a workshop for the restoration of historic carriages plus a new bridge to replace existing access over Pickering Beck.

NYMR hopes to be able to render its railway operations sustainable for the long-term so that the area’s unique heritage can be preserved and can continue to bring visitors and jobs to the region. Part of the funding for the project has come from a Heritage Lottery Fund for the NYMR's 'Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey', a £9.2M project aimed at securing the future of the railway for generations to come.

A number of nearby residents have raised concerns to the planned Pickering development, but the NYMR has expressed that it's committed to liaising directly with the local community through every step of its sustainability project.
